Zoning applications for mines in Lee County must include a “traffic impact study” which predicts the number of truck trips the mine will generate. But these estimates are far from reality once the mine gets their permit. The problem is that the traffic study cites averages over the life of the mine, assuming that the material will be hauled offsite at the same rate. For example:

In their 2001 zoning application, Westwind mine claimed they would add 284 truck trips per day to Corkscrew Road. In reality, the November 2001 Lee County Traffic Count Report stated that the mine reported 700 truck trips per day. And Corkscrew Road resident Mike Bray counted 1,236 truck trips from this mine on May 22, 2003!

The proposed Estero Group Mine (same owner & operator as Westwind) claims their new mine will add 414 truck trips per day. My math suggests we will see 1,801 additional dump truck trips per day.

The reality is that we don't experience "averaged truck traffic" when we drive on Corkscrew Road on a day-to-day basis. We experience real truck traffic, and that is only limited by the number of trucks the mine can fill and send on their way.

If this mine is approved, we should expect dump truck traffic on Corkscrew Road to at least double the current levels.

Help us prevent the industrialization of Corkscrew Road.  Plan to attend the public hearing for the Estero Group Mine scheduled to begin at 9AM on July 18^th, 2007.
