Editor, Naples Daily News:
The article by staff writer Jeremy Cox on May 31 was very informative and
accurate but for one detail. While it had the dates correct for the
approval of the various residential communities such as Wildcat Run,
Stonybrooke and The Habitat, it left the impression they were located in
the density reduction/groundwater recharge (DRGR) area and hurried their
development to avoid the DRGR restrictions.
The fact is that these developments were never located in the DRGR and
were approved long before any mines were approved on this road. These
communities' approval also predated the location of Florida Gulf Coast
University by 10 years. The residential communities along Corkscrew Road
that are located in the DRGR, such as 6L Farms and East Corkscrew Road ,
were begun 30 and 95 years ago respectively.
It is not true as stated by Greg Stuart that Corkscrew Road was "intended
for mining." It is the mines of Corkscrew Road that are encroaching into
established residential areas, not the reverse. Let's not turn Alice in
Wonderland loose here.
